How to Apply for Medicare

Social Security processes Medicare enrollments and offers several options:

  1. Online through Social Security
  2. Phone: Call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY users 1-800-325-0778)
  3. In-person at your local Social Security Office

What happens after I apply for Medicare?

Once Social Security receives your application, they will:

  • Review your application and contact you if they need any additional information or documents
  • Mail you a decision letter
  • Mail you a Welcome to Medicare packet with your Medicare ID card

It usually takes about 3 weeks for your Medicare card to arrive in the mail. While you wait, we can help you learn about coverage options such as Medicare Supplements (Medigap), Medicare Advantage, and prescription drug plan (Part D).

What documents may be required for my Medicare application?

The documents that Social Security requires will vary from person to person, but you may be asked to provide any of the following documents:

  • Original birth certificate (or certified copy)
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful alien status (if you were not born in the U.S.): U.S. passport, Certificate of Citizenship, Green Card, etc.

How to Apply for Medicare Online

You can typically enroll in less than ten minutes through the online application offered by Social Security.  After you submit your application, you will receive a confirmation number that you should keep for your records.

Remember, you are not required to receive SS income benefits to start your Medicare benefits.

To enroll in Medicare online, visit the Social Security website and follow the steps to submit your application.

How to Apply for Medicare by Phone

Depending on the call volume, Social Security may request you schedule a telephone appointment to take your application over the phone.

Tip:  They usually will mail you the forms to complete and request you mail them back to Social Security or drop off at the local office.

This back and forth can cause delays, and as a result, you should only use the phone option if you have several months before your desired Medicare effective date.

  1. Contact Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY users: 1-800-325-0778)
  2. Follow the automated prompts to “Apply for Medicare”
  3. Make an appointment for a phone interview (if required)
  4. Mail in or drop off the requested documents at the local Social Security office.
